UK Streaming Media Setup Guide (2026 Edition)

How to get TVPlay running on a streaming stick, a smart television, a phone or tablet and a set-top box, plus the broadband checks that make the difference between a smooth 4K stream and a spinning wheel.

Check Your Broadband First

TVPlay streams need a steady connection far more than a fast one. These four checks take a few minutes and solve the majority of buffering complaints before they happen.

Run a speed test on the device you will watch on

Aim for 15 Mbps or more for 1080p and 30 Mbps or more for 4K. Test on the television or stick itself rather than on a phone standing next to the router.

Use Ethernet or the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band

A cable is best. If Wi-Fi is the only option, connect to the 5 GHz network name rather than 2.4 GHz, and keep the router out of cupboards and away from the television cabinet.

Free up the device

Close other apps, clear the player app's cache from its settings, and restart the device once before a big match.

Restart the router monthly

Home routers accumulate stale connections. A thirty-second power cycle once a month keeps peak-hour performance consistent.

Setup by Device

4K streaming media sticks and cubes

The most popular route in UK homes

  1. Open the stick's settings, find the developer or “install unknown apps” option and allow it for the installer utility.
  2. Install the standard installer utility from the stick's app store, then use it to install the media player app named in your welcome email.
  3. Open the player, choose Add Playlist and pick the login option named in your email (username, password and server address).
  4. Wait for the channel list and programme guide to load the first time. Later launches take a few seconds.

Smart television platforms

Direct install from the television's own app store

  1. Open the app store on the television and search for the media player app named in your welcome email.
  2. Install it, open it and choose the login or playlist option described in the email.
  3. Some television apps use a device ID instead of a login. If yours does, send us the ID and we will link it for you.
  4. Restart the app once so the channel list and guide appear together.

Tablets, phones and streaming boxes

The same login, on the move or in a second room

  1. Install a supported media player from the device's app store.
  2. Sign in with the same details you use on the television.
  3. For mobile data, lower the stream quality in the app to save allowance; switch back to automatic on Wi-Fi.

Dedicated set-top boxes

Full programme guide and hardware decoding

  1. Install the player app or load the device ID link from your welcome email.
  2. Turn on the electronic programme guide in the app settings and let it refresh.
  3. Enable hardware decoding in the player settings for the smoothest 4K playback.

Getting the Most From the Programme Guide

Let it load fully the first time

The guide covers seven days and downloads in the background after you sign in. Give it two or three minutes on first launch before judging it.

Build a favourites group

Every supported player lets you mark channels as favourites. Ten minutes spent on this turns an 18,500-channel list into the twenty channels you actually watch.

Hide the groups you never use

International groups can be hidden from the player settings and restored at any time. The channels remain in your pass.

If the Picture Buffers or Freezes

  1. Switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet, or move to the 5 GHz band, and test again.
  2. Restart the player app, then the device, then the router, in that order.
  3. Lower the stream profile from 4K to 1080p during peak hours if your line is below 30 Mbps.
  4. Clear the player app's cache and update it to the latest version.
  5. If one channel buffers but others play, the issue is usually the source feed; try the alternative feed for the same channel in the guide.
  6. Still stuck? Message support with your device, your app and a description of what you see.
